Meet Stephen R. Coffey

Mr. Coffey is a senior partner and supervising partner of our Plaintiffs Negligence and Criminal Defense Practice. He focuses exclusively on malpractice, personal injury, products liability and criminal defense. With over thirty-five years of plaintiffs’ negligence and criminal defense experience at the State and Federal levels, he has earned a notable reputation as a litigator.

Mr. Coffey has obtained verdicts of over one million dollars in ten notable cases and is among 1% of the nation’s attorneys who appear in a publication entitled The Best Lawyers in America for his work as a personal injury and criminal law litigator. In fact, he has the unusual distinction of being listed in three categories. Under his leadership, O’Connell and Aronowitz has become one of the most active plaintiff law firms in Upstate New York.

In the area of medical malpractice, Mr. Coffey has successfully litigated complicated catastrophic injury cases in multiple disciplines including neurology, obstetrics, general surgery, neurosurgery, psychology, infectious disease, pediatrics, thoracic surgery, cardiology, orthopedic surgery, neonatology and pediatric neurology. He also has an extensive appellate practice and has briefed and argued cases in the Appellate Divisions throughout the State of New York, the New York Court of Appeals and the Federal Appellate Courts.

Mr. Coffey appears regularly as a commentator on local television and radio stations to discuss highly publicized local and national civil and criminal cases. He has lectured and written extensively on civil and criminal trial practice. He recently co-authored the article “Punitive Damages” for a National Business Institute book entitled For the Plaintiff: Determining and Proving Damages – For the Defense: Limiting Damages in New York. Mr. Coffey has been selected to appear in the New Third Edition of the National Directory of Criminal Lawyers. He is a statewide guest lecturer for the New York State Bar Association and a national lecturer on Medicaid Fraud.

A former Assistant District Attorney for Albany County and Chief Felony Prosecutor, Mr. Coffey was the youngest Felony Bureau Chief to serve in Albany County. He also served as Special Prosecutor in Fulton and Albany Counties. He is a graduate of Albany Law School and Siena College. He is admitted practice in the U.S. Supreme Court; U.S. District Court, Eastern, Southern, and Western Districts of New York; New York State Supreme Court, Second Circuit Court of Appeals; U.S. District Court, State of Massachusetts; U.S. District Court, State of New Hampshire, and all New York State Courts.
