IB Member Spotlight: J.R. Whaley

J.R. Whaley
Whaley Law Firm
Baton Rouge, LA

Fast Facts —

One thing most people may not know about you. I am on the board for a nonprofit in Louisiana that focuses on helping at-risk children and solving human-trafficking issues.

Favorite sports team. LSU Tigers.

Outside of law, what other profession would you have chosen? I would love to be a history professor. I find history very interesting and I think it would be a great experience to teach our young generation.

On the weekend. You can find me with my kids in Baton Rouge.

What inspired you to become a trial lawyer?
JW: I recognized becoming a trial lawyer as a wonderful way to positively impact people’s lives. I enjoy taking complex issues and breaking them down into little parts in order to figure out a logical solution.

You decided to start your own practice. Can you describe the experience?
JW: The entire experience has been very exciting as well as rewarding. A benefit is the ability to share unique personal ideas and network more extensively with those around you. A disadvantage is the initial isolation; however, once you have a system in place, having your own practice is a great advantage in all aspects of business.

Like other IB members, you’re very involved in your local community. Why do you think this is so important to members and the overall success of our group?
JW: I believe being involved in the community is simply the right thing to do — regardless of profession. It is a blessing to give back to others. Being part of a nationwide group of lawyers with the same beliefs allows for great relief to those in need.

Why is an IB membership of value to your firm?
JW: The opportunity to be in a group with like-minded people is a tremendous resource for our firm. With IB, I have the ability to reach and refer potential clients around the country through great network of lawyers. Also, using the Legal Examiner provides value as we can view and share experiences with other members.
