IB Members Participate in Community Rebuild During AAJ

1653748_10153716999355018_1829172608_nWhile at the 2014 American Association for Justice winter conference in New Orleans, IB members and their guests took some time out to help volunteer in a community rebuilding project in the city’s 7th Ward

As part of its community efforts, The Injury Board partnered with Hands On New Orleans, which helps coordinate service opportunities for residents in the New Orleans community. Several IB staff, members and their guests joined together for a community rebuilding project at the Boys and Girls Garden of the 7th Ward, a kids’ community garden and after-school program initiative.

1901431_10153717002495018_844617777_nMembers worked in the garden to help complete projects that the children were unable to do after school; they moved and reinstalled a compost bin, cut down a banana tree, painted boards for new plant beds and cleaned and removed overgrowth and weeds in the garden. IB also donated more than $250 of gardening supplies to 7th Ward Boys and Girls Garden.

In just two hours, the volunteers were able to complete work that would have taken the children days—if not longer—to accomplish.

“The Injury Board is composed of trial attorneys who have a strong commitment to doing good in their individual communities.” said IB co-founder Tom Young. “Extending that commitment to the cities and towns we visit is an integral part of who we are as an organization.”

The 7th Ward is home to many New Orleans cultural traditions, including Social Aids and Pleasure Clubs, Mardi Gras Indians, superior craftsmanship, and jazz and brass band music. In the last few decades, due to neglect and lack of opportunity, this richly historical neighborhood has been weakened by blight, crime and poverty.

Our good works initiatives will continue at ROI2014, scheduled for May 7-10. We have partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast Wood Valley Unit to participate in a group bike-building and after-school program event.
